So Much Beauty in the World

One of my favorite movies of all time is American Beauty. The message about appreciating the beauty around you is so powerful. Here’s a short three minute video of the end of the film. Slight spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the movie.

To those of you who didn’t want to watch because of the spoilers, here is the pivotal quote from the clip (no spoilers here):

“It’s hard to stay mad, when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once, and it’s too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that’s about to burst… And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can’t feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life… You have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m sure. But don’t worry… you will someday.”

I think of this quote often. When I feel myself slipping into a bad mood, I think of it to remind myself of the beauty in the world. When I am awestruck by natural beauty, I feel my heart-balloon filling up to burst. When I feel anxiety about holding onto the good moments and people in my life, I remind myself to relax and let it “flow through me like rain.” When I feel sorry for myself, I remember to have gratitude for every moment, even the small things.

This sums up the very essence of my view of the world; there is something indescribably beautiful that is innate within everyone and everything, and the best thing you can do is recognize that and appreciate it.

So gorgeous... a true "American Beauty moment"
